A message regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19):
CHEC continues to take proactive actions to respond to the impacts of COVID-19 on the Hatteras Island community. Due to the ongoing pandemic, our 2020 Annual Meeting of Members, originally scheduled for early May, has been canceled. The decision to cancel the meeting was made in accordance with the guidelines set by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as well as local, State and Federal government entities. We hope to schedule a 75th anniversary celebration and member appreciation event later this year.
We will conduct our election of directors as scheduled, and in accordance with our by-laws. Election ballots, nominee biographies and a postage-paid return envelope will be mailed to all members this week. Official ballots must be return-mailed to CHEC by April 30th .
For members experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19, we have suspended all disconnects for nonpayment and late fees through May 31st. Although we have suspended disconnections for nonpayment temporarily, members will still be responsible for electric use during this time. We encourage you to make payments towards your account, as you are able, to minimize the balance due when we resume regular business.
We are taking measures to protect our critical workforce, including closing our lobby to the public. Please conduct your business with the cooperative by phone, at (252) 995-5616, or you may utilize our member portal or mobile app (Android or iOS). For those members needing to make a cash payment, please include the account number and a phone number with your payment and deposit in the drop box next to the front door. Please continue to report outages to (866) 511-9862.
Finally, I encourage you to stay extra vigilant about cyber scams regarding COVID-19. Cyber hackers may send emails with malicious attachments or links to fraudulent websites to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or donating to fraudulent charities or causes. Exercise caution in handling any email with a COVID-19-related subject line, attachment, or hyperlink, and be wary of social media pleas, texts or calls related to COVID-19.
We are grateful to be a part of your community and honored to provide electricity and services that power your life. While we work together to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, CHEC is here for you, just as we always have been, and always will be.
