Saturday October 12 OUTAGE UPDATE:
7:00AM Update: The Nags Head Fire Department is on the way to spray the salt off of the switch we are having issues with just south of Oregon Inlet. In the meantime, we are working to bring up the Buxton generation plant to provide some temporary power. More updates to follow.
5:30AM Update: This morning's outages are being caused by salt contamination on the system. Several days of NE winds and no rain can cause salt to deposit and build up on the electrical system. This results in crackling, sparking, arching and occasionally power outages. Crews are continuing work to correct the problem.
4:45AM Update: Crews located a fault in the fuse at the Pea Island Visitor's center and were able to energize the transmission before it shortly went back out. They are continuing to ride the line north to Oregon Inlet to locate any additional faults.
Thank you for your patience as road conditions are causing restoration efforts to take longer than usual.
2:00AM: We are currently experiencing a power outage affecting all of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. Crews have been dispatched and we will update with more information as soon as possible.
